چکیده

To the Editor, We are gravely concerned that the conclusions reached by Bandak [1] may be invalid due to apparent numerical errors in his estimation of forces experienced in an infant neck during vigorous shaking. More specifically, we have repeated the author’s calculations and we find values of neck forces that are actually more than 10 times lower than those presented in Bandak’s Table 3. Using the free body diagram of the infant head and neck (Fig. 3), Bandak identified the two components of neck force during rotation of the head—the tangential force F t and the normal force Fn. Bandak described the basic equations for neck forces during a simplified shaking event, but did not present detailed methods for calculating the upper neck loads. We define them here for completeness:

The shaken baby syndrome. A clinical, pathological, and biomechanical study.

Because a history of shaking is often lacking in the so-called "shaken baby syndrome," diagnosis is usually based on a constellation of clinical and radiographic findings. Forty-eight cases of infants and young children with this diagnosis seen between 1978 and 1985 at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia were reviewed. All patients had a presenting history thought to be suspicious for child...

The evidence base for shaken baby syndrome.

The phrase “shaken baby syndrome” evokes a powerful image of abuse, in which a carer shakes a child sufficiently hard to produce whiplash forces that result in subdural and retinal bleeding. The theory of shaken baby syndrome rests on core assumptions: shaking is always intentional and violent; the injury an infant receives from shaking is invariably severe; and subdural and retinal bleeding is...

Shaken baby syndrome: the quest for evidence

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS), characterized by the triad of subdural haemorrhage, retinal haemorrhage, and encephalopathy, was initially based on the hypothesis that shaking causes tearing of bridging veins and bilateral subdural bleeding. It remains controversial. New evidence since SBS was first defined three decades ago needs to be reviewed. Neuropathology shows that most cases do not have tra...

Folk remedies and child abuse: a review with emphasis on caida de mollera and its relationship to shaken baby syndrome.

OBJECTIVE There were two objectives: first, to make the reader familiar with folk remedies that might be confused with child abuse; second, to challenge the idea existing in the literature that treatment for the Hispanic folk illness caida de mollera can cause the injuries seen in the shaken baby syndrome. METHOD Literature review and analysis with case application were used. RESULTS A wide...
